Elderly People and Digital Media: My Mom’s Journey into Social Media

The digital world is growing every day, connecting people across distances and making life more convenient. But for elderly individuals, stepping into the world of digital media can feel overwhelming. Many struggle with learning new technology, while others embrace it with excitement.

Recently, I had the chance to interview my mom, who just started using social media. She enjoys it but also faces some challenges. Her experience gives insight into how elderly people adapt to digital life, and what we can do to support them.

Seniors and Social Media: A Growing Trend

Many elderly people are now joining social media to stay connected with family and friends. Studies show that around 45% of seniors over 65 use platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp, a big jump from a decade ago.

For my mom, social media became a way to stay in touch with loved ones, watch videos, and follow news updates. At first, she was hesitant, but now she enjoys scrolling through posts and sharing messages.

💬 "It feels nice to see what my family is up to, especially those who live far away."

However, while she likes using social media, she also finds it frustrating at times.

The Challenges: What’s Hard for Seniors?

Even though my mom enjoys social media, there are a few struggles that make things difficult for her:

Too many buttons and options – "Sometimes I click the wrong thing and don’t know how to go back!"
Confusing settings – "I don’t understand how to change privacy settings or delete something I posted by mistake."
Fake news and scams – "I see so many messages forwarded in groups. I don’t know which ones are true!"
Updates and changes – "Every time I learn something, the app updates, and I have to learn it again."

These challenges are common among elderly people. Many fear they might do something wrong or fall for scams.

What Helps Seniors Feel Comfortable Online?

To help my mom, I made sure to teach her step by step. Here are some things that worked well:

Explaining things in simple language – Avoiding technical terms helped her understand better.
Showing instead of just telling – Demonstrating how to use features made it easier for her to remember.
Writing down instructions – She found it useful to have a small notebook with step-by-step guides.
Encouraging her to explore – Letting her practice on her own gave her confidence.

After a few weeks, she started feeling more comfortable. She even helped her friends learn too!

💬 At first, I was afraid I would break something. But now I like using Facebook and WhatsApp to stay in touch with family. I even joined a group for cooking recipes!

Making Social Media Senior-Friendly

While my mom is enjoying her digital journey, there’s still a need to make social media more accessible for seniors. Some ways to improve this include:

Bigger text and clear buttons for easier navigation
Step-by-step guides for new users
Simple privacy settings to prevent accidental public posts
Better scam protection to prevent fraud targeting elderly users

Technology should be for everyone, no matter their age. If we make digital platforms more senior-friendly, more elderly people will be able to enjoy the benefits of staying connected online.

Final Thoughts: A New Digital Chapter

My mom’s experience with social media shows that with the right support, anyone can learn to use digital tools. The key is patience, practice, and a little guidance.

💬 I used to think social media was only for young people. Now, I love using it to connect with family and friends!
